What is Natural Search?
Natural search refers to all unpaid search results that appear in a search engine based on relevance - ie Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Each search engine has its own algorithm that determines what webpages appear for a specific query inserted by the user / searcher.
Improving your natural search rankings can deliver increased traffic to your site (About Me page, Stores page, etc), helping you drive more eyes to your listings and pages!
How can I get my About Me page to show up on Google? / How can I get my ME page ranked higher on Google?
Create Great matter on your Page:
CONTENT IS KING!!! The content is the quality and quantity of material that you write in your page and that will be the key to your natural search success... or simply put, showing up on Google. Few of things to keep in mind while creating your ME page:
- Make sure to place strong, relevant keywords throughout the page body and in text.
- Place pertinent keywords within your headers by using header tags (H1, H2, etc).
- Keywords can also be stressed by bold and italics formatting.
For example: - Your About Me page is dedicated to your book collection and the books you sell, you will like to ensure that the content and keywords placed on the page are all relevant and surrounded with book related content.
Note – Text is always more searchable than images.
Create Strong Linkages
Strong linkage to a website / webpage raises a page’s relevance and eventually its search engine ranking.
It is important to link your ME page to your eBay pages via text links as this assists the search engines by pointing them towards related pages. Your About Me page, for instance, should highlight your Stores Page and perhaps your relevant search results pages
For example: If you are selling women’s apparel, you can create text links ‘Women cotton and nylon sleepwear at bargain price’ and link it to all your products that satisfy the criteria. You can use ‘Advanced Search’ function on eBay to create the requisite links.
Submit Your Webpage to the Engines: Most of the search engines (Google, Yahoo!, AltaVista, etc) allow you to submit your site for free; upon entering your URL, email contact, and other pertinent information, the search engine directs its crawlers to enter your site.
The following are links to the site submission pages for several of the major search engines:
* Google: www.google.com/addurl.html
* MSN: free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm
* Yahoo!: docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest
* All The Web: www.alltheweb.com/help/webmaster/submit_site.html
* AltaVista: addurl.altavista.com
What should I NOT do in my ME page?
Avoid these natural search killers:
Avoid Splash Pages: Flash and heavily graphic introductions prohibit engines from crawling your site. Because crawlers work best with text links, splash pages are very troublesome. A good rule of thumb: always keep your most valuable and compelling information up-front and in text.
Avoid Frames: Never use pages with frames. Frames are too complex for the crawlers and too cumbersome to index.
Frames divide a webpage into multiple (two or more) independent parts - called frames. Each frame has a separate HTML file and, consequently, its own URL.
You can see a very basic demo at:
https://www.warebizprogramming.com/tutorials/html/framesEx1.htm
If you notice, the left frame has a different URL than the body / right frame.
Avoid JavaScript when Possible: Though JavaScript menus are very popular, they disable crawlers from accessing those links. Most, well-indexed Web sites incorporate text-based links primarily because they are search engine friendly. If necessary, JavaScript should be referenced externally.
Avoid Hidden / Invisible Text: Search engines immediately recognise hidden text and consider such practices to be "cheating."
FAQs
If I search for my username on Google, I can find my ME page, stores, auctions, and chat board posts. How can I use all this to help my sales?
Like mentioned above, keep adding great content to your page and add text-based links on your pages to other important pages. Your ME page should have a link to the store page, auctions, etc. Help Google help you
Does a punctuated name dilute my google results?
A punctuated name should not hurt your rankings, BUT remember that Google returns results based on a user's query. For example, no one is going to search *G*r*e*a*t*d*e*a*l*s*. You are better off labeling the page and the text as Great Deals
Does a unique name help my google results?
Tricky question because, although a unique name is easier to rank well for, few users will search for that query. That said, it is difficult to rank highly for a general query like MP3 because it is so competitive and too broad. Finding a balance is probably the best route.
