Samsung is the top gadget brand

Mumbai, May 11, 2012: eBay India (www.eBay.in), India’s leading eCommerce marketplace, released the Battle of the Gadget Rankings for the most popular gadget models & brands based on an analysis of all gadget transactions on eBay India from January 1, 2012 to March 31, 2012. The research report showcases interesting trends of India’s Top Gadget Cities, Models & Brands across 4 popular gadget categories of Laptops, Cameras, Mobile Phones & Televisions.

The most popular gadget brand has been retained by Samsung with 31% of market share across the gadget categories of Laptops, Cameras, Mobile Phones & Televisions on eBay India. The most popular brands are Samsung in the Mobile Phones category, Nikon in the Digital Camera category, Apple in the Laptop category & Samsung in the TV Category. On an average day on eBay India, A mobile handset sells every 3 minutes, A laptop sells every 13 minutes & A digital camera sells every 25 minutes.

In the latest edition of Battle of the Gadgets, a key trend is that gadgets are getting increasing traction with non metro shoppers with as much as 57% of transactions coming from beyond the metros. In fact, cities like Hissar, Bikaner, Meerut & Coimbatore feature amongst the Top 10 Cities.

Staying Connected: Top Mobile Brands & Model Rankings

  • Overall: Samsung emerges as the unbeatable leader amongst popular brands in Mobile Phone category with 31% market share of all mobile phone brands purchased on eBay India. Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 is the most purchased mobile phone model. Perhaps as a New Year's resolution to stay connected with loved ones, the Capital City Delhi has bought the most Mobile Phones.
  • Smart Phones: Samsung also dominates the Smart Phones category with 35% market share amongst the popular Smart Phone brands with Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 being the most popular Smart Phone. Sony and Blackberry are neck-to-neck on the second position. Given the width of models launched by Samsung, Sony and Blackberry, they have together captured 87% of market share amongst transactions in the smart phone category. Delhi bought the most Smart Phones in the quarter. Indicative of the large demand of Smartphones in non-metros, cities such as Indore and Hissar have also featured amongst the top 10 Smart Phone Cities.
  • Dual SIM Phones: Micromax retains its position as the most purchased brand amongst Dual SIM Phones, while Nokia X2-02 is the most purchased Dual SIM phone model. Samsung gained market share in the top Dual SIM phone models with new launches in the first quarter. Bengaluru continues to consume the most Dual SIM phones on eBay India.
  • Value Phones: Samsung gained lead position amongst Value Phone brands with Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 model being the most purchased model in the category with 40% market share amongst the top 10 models purchased in this category. Delhi purchased the most value phones. Non-metro cities such as Meerut, Coimbatore, Bikaner and Amritsar also feature in the top 10 Value Phone cities

Preparing for Memorable Vacations: Top Camera Brands & Model Rankings

  • Overall: The volume of transactions for Digital Cameras went up by 26% in Jan-March, 2012 over the previous quarter. Nikon and Canon top overall Digital Cameras Category with 27% each market share of all transactions for Digital Cameras; Sony slips to the 3rd position. In fact, Canon witnessed an 84% increase in transactions in Jan-March, 2012 as compared to Oct-Dec, 2011. Canon EOS 550-D is the most purchased Digital Camera Model. Bengaluru followed by Delhi and Chennai were the top three cities respectively, indulging in Digital Cameras. The three cities accounted for 60% of Digital Camera sales. Non-metros such as Trivandrum and Vishakhapatnam featured in the top 10 Digital CAMERA Cities.
  • Compact Cameras: Sony continues as the most popular compact camera brand and Sony CyberShot DSC H70 is also the most purchased compact digital camera. Chennai bought the most compact cameras followed by Bengaluru and Mumbai. As India headed towards the summer vacations season, March saw a spike in the transactions for Compact Digital Cameras.
  • Long Zoom Cameras: Nikon leads the Long Zoom Category with 51% market share and Nikon COOLPIX L120 was the most bought Long Zoom camera. Bengaluru bought the most long zoom cameras, perhaps to capture landscapes around the Garden City.
  • Digital SLR Cameras: Canon rules in the Digital SLR segment with 78% market share and Canon EOS 550D was the most purchased model. Volume of transactions for Canon saw an upswing of 84% in Jan-March, 2012 from Oct-Dec, 2011. Bangaloreans also took up professional photography in a big way and bought the most Digital SLR Cameras.

  • Overall: Apple has jumped to the top from the 4th rank last quarter. Dell slips to second position followed by iberry, new entrant in the top Laptop brands list. Tablets dominate the category with 44% share and iPad 2 is the most purchased Model in the category. March saw a 62% jump in transactions over Feb 2012. Bengaluru bought the most laptops in India.
  • Netbooks: Acer is the most popular netbook brand and the top purchased Netbook is the Acer Aspire One. Chennai purchased the most netbooks in the country. Netbooks popularity continues to decline to rising demand for Tablets.
  • Tablets: Apple took a big bite of the tablet market share with iPad 2 being the top purchased tablet. Tablets with 3G are gaining traction as 3G connectivity penetrates deeper into the country. About 30% of all tablets purchased were 3G enabled. Tablets transactions moved up by about 46% from Oct-Dec, 2011. In March 2012, there was a 77% increase in transactions over Feb 2012. Bengaluru again features as the top Tablet city.
  • Regular Laptops: Dell retains its top position in Regular Laptops followed by Apple that has moved up from 6th Rank in Oct-Dec 2011 to 2nd. Apple MacBook PRO 13.3" has been popular in the Regular Laptops segment followed by Dell Inspiron N4050. Bengaluru, Chennai & Delhi are neck-to-neck on Regular Laptops consumption with a collective market share of 53%. In March, there was a 46% jump in transactions over Feb 2012.

  • Overall: Samsung gains leadership in TVs this quarter (Jan-Mar 2012) followed by Sony. The Samsung 40D5000 is the most purchased television in the country. From 32 inches the previous quarter, India has advanced to 40" TVs as the most popular size. LCD TVs lead with 55% market share followed by LED TVs with 38% market share. Bengaluru bought the most TVs in India. March saw a sharp upswing in TV purchases of almost 200% over February 2012.
  • LCD TVs: Sony leads LCD TVs segment with 47% followed by Toshiba and Samsung. The top 3 brands collectively make 89% of market share. Toshiba overtakes Samsung in LCD segment with a sales lift of 15% in transaction volumes over Oct-Dec 2011. Sony Bravia KDL 32CX520 leads the LCD TV segment. Delhi tops the LCD TV segment followed by Bengaluru and Chennai.
  • LED TVs: Samsung is the most popular LED TV brand. Samsung and Sony together dominate the LED TV segment with 95% market share of all transactions. Samsung 40D5000 was the most preferred buy in the Jan-Mar 2012. LED TVs with 3D feature have gained 11% market share of all LED TV purchased on eBay India in Jan-Mar 2012. Brand Sony dominated the 3D LED TV segment with 73% market share. Bengaluru again is the Top LED TVs city.
