Mumbai, December 16, 2009: eBay India ( www.eBay.in ), India's leading eCommerce marketplace , announced that Mumbai was the second largest eCommerce Hub* in the country, according to the eBay India Census 2009. Mumbai also ranked highest for domestic trade in the eBay Census. In eBay Census 2008, Delhi had ranked second after Mumbai. Mr. Kashyap Vadapalli, Director-Marketing, eBay India today unveiled the eBay Census Guide which documents the key findings and trends in online buying and selling across Indians in the Top 100 eCommerce Hubs, 28 States and 7 Union Territories . eBay Census also revealed export trends to 172 Countries.
India's Top 5 eCommerce Hubs are Delhi , closely followed by Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur & Bengaluru . According to the eBay India Census, Mr. Vadapalli revealed:
- eCommerce in India is mainstream: India had over 2,471 eCommerce Hubs in eBay Census 2009. With Lakshadweep making its debut in eBay Census 2009, all 28 States and 7 Union Territories witnessed eCommerce Transactions. The IT Hubs of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat were the most wired states in India with the most cities where eCommerce originates.
- Rural Indians are active online shoppers: Online shopping is active in 747 rural towns in India. Rural India featured in eBay Census for the first time with towns like Bundi (Rajasthan), Thevaram (Tamil Nadu) and Tezpur (Assam) witnessing active buying and selling trends. In fact, 181 rural towns are active entrepreneurship hubs – selling to buyers in India & worldwide.
- Global Trade is well established: India has 226 Export Hubs where Indian entrepreneurs sell a variety of products to millions of eBayers in 172 countries around the globe. Indian exports include horse saddles, Freemason collectibles, Bollywood memorabilia, Steel Dabbas and cricket bats.
- Category mix – Technology dominates India, Lifestyle dominates Exports: Technology is India's favourite traded vertical category contributing to 44 % of transactions in eBay Census. Lifestyle category at 35% came second in popularity for online Indians. For Global Trade , Lifestyle is the clear winner at 64 % of all transactions followed by Media & Collectibles at 15% each.
- Region-South buys, West sells: South India has the most active buyers at 41 % of all transactions, followed by West India at 27%. West India has the most active sellers at 46 %, followed by North India at 28%.
- Bharat, India & Rural India displayed different online shopping behaviour: Distinct product preferences emerged amongst eBayers in Bharat, India & Rural India. Metro India bought the most blackberry and dual sim handsets, Bharat bought the most touch screen cell phones while Rural India bought the most value handsets.
- Profit Buying: Entrepreneurship is the new mantra for India as 4 out of the 6 metros – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai & Kolkata- are all profit buying cities which sold more items on eBay than they bought.
- Bridging Distribution gaps: Online marketplaces like eBay help create trade between Rural Towns, Tier 2 and 3 cities and metros as well as Global countries. Artisans of wooden ethnic furniture in Jodhpur used eBay as a distribution channel to sell to buyers in metros and export internationally to USA and Singapore. Craftsmen in Ludhiana exported golf clubs to international eBayers in USA, Germany and France.
The eBay Census also revealed many interesting trends about the online shopping habits of Mumbaikars including:
Trend 1: Mumbai residents prefer technology: Technology got the lion's share of Mumbai online shoppers wallets at 41% of all transactions. Mumbai entrepreneurs sold the most technology gadgets at 49% of all transactions to buyers in India. Lifestyle scored on the Exports front at 57% of all transactions.
Trend 2: Commercial capital keeps the nation connected: Mumbai sells the most Blackberry Handsets in the country.
Trend 3: Mumbai youth are the most ambitious: Mumbai youth bought the most educational textbooks in the country, including medical, engineering and foreign languages.
Trend 4: Mumbai keeps the nation fit: Mumbai sold the most health instruments in the country.
Trend 5: Mumbai keeps the world on time: Mumbai exports the most watches to international eBayers.
Trend 6: Youthful Mumbai : Mumbaikars like to stay ever young – buying the most party T-shirts and hair dyes in the country.
Trend 7: Mumbai's key areas displayed distinct shopping trends.
- South Mumbai bought loose gemstones, diamonds and diamond pendants, while East Mumbai bought pearl necklaces. West Mumbai bought diamond earrings and diamond and pearl studs. North Mumbai bought gemstone studded watches for women and gemstone studded rings.
- Byculla bought the most treadmills in Mumbai, Parel preferred vacuum cleaners, Vile Parle bought the most rudrakshas and Kandivali bought the most Shree Yantras.
- Bandra & Juhu bought the most Blackberry handsets in Mumbai.
Mumbai's Top 5 Bought & Sold
Loose Diamonds, British Indian Coins, Value Handsets, Indians Stamps & USB Drives are the Top 5 purchases by eBayers in Mumbai.
Mumbai Entrepreneurs Top Sold Products include Loose Diamonds, Value Handsets, USB Drives, Health Instruments & MP3 Players .
Mumbai's Top Exported included Wristwatches , Books, PC Games-Action/ Adventure, Loose Diamonds & Craft – Sewing and Fabric.
