Selecting and Changing eBay Shop Categories

Similar to a physical shop, your eBay Shop categories are the "shelves" that allow you to organise and display your listings to buyers.

Selecting and Changing eBay Shop Categories discusses:

Basic facts about Shop categories

  • Your Shop categories don't need to match eBay's categories.

  • You can create as many as 300 Shop categories and subcategories with up to three levels of categories. For example, a category named Sporting Goods can have two additional subcategories: Sporting Goods > Golf >Balls.

  • Another category, named Other items, will appear for listings that you did not assign to a Shop category.

  • Each category name can consist of up to 29 characters.

  • When you create a new listing, you can assign it to one of your Shop categories, in addition to a standard eBay category.

  • You can add, rename, edit, move, and delete Shop categories at any time.

  • A category will not appear in your Shop if there are no listings in it.

  • You can move listings from one category to another.

Note: Listings that you created before you opened your Shop automatically appear in the "Other items" Shop category, but you can edit them to change your category selection.

Tips for setting up Shop categories

  • Think like a buyer. Create a set of categories that help buyers quickly find the types of items that you have to offer without overwhelming them. You can organise your listings according to brand, type of item, price levels, and so on. For example, if your Shop primarily sells laptop computers, you could include categories such as: Laptops > Laptop Cases > Samsonite.

  • Be sure that you have enough listings to make each category meaningful to a buyer. If you only have a few listings in each category, you probably have too many categories and might be creating a poor buying experience.

  • List your items in two categories—a main Shop category and a secondary Shop category. Listing in two Shop categories is free.

  • Consider creating special categories that attract buyers' attention, such as "50% Off" or "Featured Items".
