When buyers search on eBay, they’re shown items from a number of sellers, but which ones appear towards the top of the list? Knowing the answer to this can help you improve your search standing and increase sales.
In search results, we want to display the items that most closely match what the buyer is looking for. When you list your item, take advantage of every opportunity to make your item relevant to the buyer’s search. Use the following table to learn more.
When specifying your:
Do this:
Item title
Use all 80 characters of the title to include words buyers would use to find your listing.
Include descriptive words that are important for your particular item, whether that means the brand, designer, year, size, color, material, or even terms such as “antique.” Learn more about writing an effective title.
Category
List your item in all relevant categories.
If you list only in one category, make sure it’s the right one. Learn more about selecting a category.
Item specifics
Use item specifics to describe your item’s features, attributes, and condition. We use these item specifics to help determine which items are most relevant to the buyer’s search.
Add as many item specifics as possible.
Don’t skip important item specifics, such as Condition. If your item is new but you don’t specify its condition in your item specifics, buyers who narrow their search results to look for new items won’t see your listing.
Product information
If your item matches a product in our catalog, you’ll be offered the choice to list your item using the prefilled product information. Whenever possible, list using the catalogue information.
When buyers search for products that are in our catalogue (such as a DVD or video game system), matching products appear first in search results.
In addition to generating repeat business, focusing on customer satisfaction can get your listings promoted in search. Sellers who provide great customer service qualify for a raised standing in search results. The better your customer satisfaction, the bigger your boost in search results.
When it comes to customer satisfaction, your buyers’ opinions count. To determine who provides the best service, we take into account your detailed seller ratings (DSRs) and buyer satisfaction rating.
Detailed seller ratings (DSRs) let yourbuyers evaluate you anonymously based on four specific criteria, including item description, communication, shipping time, and shipping and handling charges.
Buyer satisfaction rating measures your levels of customer service based on several factors. Your rating is lowered if you receive negative or neutral Feedback or low detailed seller ratings. It’s also lowered if a buyer opens a case with you for an “item not received” or “item significantly not as described.”
To see where you rank in customer satisfaction, use your Seller Dashboard to monitor your detailed seller ratings and buyer satisfaction rating. To find out whether you qualify for a raised search standing, check your Seller Dashboard Summary. Visit your Seller Dashboard now.
When you think about prices, consider shipping costs as part of the equation. In search results, we give a boost to items that offer free shipping. If your shipping charges are excessive, your search standing will be lowered. To see how buyers rate your shipping and handling charges, review the detailed seller ratings in your Seller Dashboard.
When deciding how to price items, pay attention to the competition. For fixed-price listings, offering low prices can spark interest in your items. If you often sell the same items, you can build on this recent sales history to improve your search standing.
Your “recent sales” is the number of unique buyers who bought an item from you using an individual fixed-price listing. If you frequently sell the same items, take advantage of your sales volume to receive a boost in search results.
Here’s how it works:
If your fixed-price listing sells successfully, you’ll receive a boost in search results when you relist.
If you use a multi-quantity listing to sell several items at once, you’ll receive a boost in search results as your items sell. Learn more about selling multiple items in a single listing.
Use the following table to find out more about building your recent sales.
Ways to build recent sales
What to do
Relist your fixed-price items
When you need to sell the same item again, relist the item rather than creating a new listing.
When relisting, don’t increase the price or change the title, category, or item condition. Otherwise, it won’t count as the same item and you won’t receive a boost for recent sales. You can, however, lower the item’s price.
Use a multi-quantity listing to sell identical items
Use a multi-quantity listing and list the items at a fixed price.
Give yourself time to build recent sales by choosing the 30-day duration or Good ‘Til Cancelled option.
There are many factors that affect how your items appear in search results. Use the following table to learn more.
Question
Answer
Do all my items appear in search results?
In search results, we include all items that match the buyer’s search.
However, each page of search results displays a maximum of 10 items from a single seller, unless there are no other matching items. This 10-item limit helps ensure that buyers are given a choice of items from many sellers.
Which listing format should I use to increase my exposure in search results?
Each page of search results displays a mixture of items in both auction-style and fixed-price formats
There are many factors to consider when choosing a listing format. Here are some tips to help you decide:
If your item is unique or you’re unsure of its value, consider using an auction-style listing.
If you’re selling multiple identical items, consider listing them at a fixed price using a multi-quantity listing.
If you’re not sure how to list your item, try some sample searches to see how your listing would compare to those from other sellers.
Among auction-style listings, which items receive a higher search standing?
Items that are ending soonest are given an additional boost in search results. A seller's performance rating also contributes to each listing's placement in search.
Among fixed-price listings, which items receive a higher search standing?
