Making a Second Chance Offer
A second chance to sell your item

A seller can make a Second Chance Offer to a bidder other than the winning bidder when:

  • The winning bidder of an item listing fails to buy the item
  • The seller has duplicate items for sale but hasn't chosen to run a Multiple Item Auction

Frequently Asked Questions about Second Chance Offers

What is a Second Chance Offer?

Second Chance Offers can be sent to any of the non-winning bidders if the winning bidder does not pay the seller or if a seller has duplicate items. Second Chance Offers can be created immediately after a listing ends for up to 60 days. Sellers should ensure that everything has been done to resolve the issue with the winning bidder in non-paying buyer cases before sending a Second Chance Offer to another bidder. See the Unpaid Item process for details.

Why should a seller send a Second Chance Offer?

A seller might make a Second Chance Offer if their auction's winning bidder didn't pay for the item. The Second Chance Offer feature also allows sellers to offer duplicate items to their non-winning bidders, while at the same time selling their item to the winning bidder. Please note, however, that it's not possible to make Second Chance Offers in a Multiple Item Auction (Dutch Auction).

Best of all, creating a Second Chance Offer is FREE. Sellers pay only the Final Value Fee when the offer is accepted.

Who can a seller send a Second Chance Offer to?

Second Chance offers can be sent to any of the non-winning bidders if the high bidder does not buy the item or if a seller has duplicate items. Second Chance offers can be created immediately after a listing ends and for up to 60 days. Please note that Second Chance Offers will not be sent to bidders who have opted not to receive them.

Sellers should be sure that everything has been done to resolve the issue with the non-paying buyer before sending a Second Chance Offer. Also, the number of offers you send can't be more than the number of items you have for sale.

How does a seller send a Second Chance Offer?
Sellers can send a Second Chance Offer from any of these pages:
  • Bid History (Go to your closed listing and then click on the Bid History link)
  • My eBay (Under the Selling tab, click the Send a Second Chance Offer link)
  • Item page for a closed listing (Sign in with your user ID and you will see a link in the top section)
  • Non-Paying Buyer Program

Note: Second Chance Offer link is only available for closed listings with at least one non-winning bidder.

Who can view the Second Chance Offer?
Any seller can view his or her Second Chance Offer. Remember: Only the non-winning bidder who receives a Second Chance Offer can view and purchase it.
Are there any fees for sending a Second Chance Offer?
eBay does not charge a Listing Fee to send a Second Chance Offer. Sellers pay only the Final Value Fee when the offer is accepted.
How does feedback work with Second Chance Offers?
A seller can leave feedback for the non-paying buyer in the initial sale and for the buyer in the Second Chance Offer sale. Buyers, as usual, can leave feedback for the seller.
How does Checkout work with Second Chance Offers?
Buyers who accept a Second Chance Offer will be able to use Checkout. Please note that once a seller sends a Second Chance Offer, the original high bidder will no longer be able to use Checkout.
In the event that something goes wrong with the sale, can the buyer file a claim?
Yes. Second Chance Offer sales are covered by eBay services. Under the eBay Buyer Protection Program, most items on eBay may be covered for up to Rs. 10,000 (minus Rs. 50 to cover processing costs).
As a buyer, what if I do not wish to receive a Second Chance Offer?
You can choose not to receive Second Chance Offers by changing your notification preferences.
